QUALIFICATION
The U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, comprised of 25 players, will be selected by general Bill Guerin and his management team from among the top American players competing in the NHL.
On June 16, 2025, the first six members of the team were revealed in forwards Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Brady Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk, along with defensemen Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy.
The remaining 19 players will likely be named in early January 2026.
PREVIEW
Expectations are high for the 2026 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, which will seek to bring home Olympic gold for the first time since the 1980 Miracle On Ice team. For the first time since the 2014 Games, players from the NHL will be participating, and Team USA's 25-man roster will be comprised entirely of the top American stars from NHL.
Fans had a mini preview of what the Team USA might look like during last February's NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, which along with the U.S., included teams from Canada, Finland and Sweden, all populated entirely with NHL players. The U.S. lost an overtime thriller against Canada in the championship game, and that loss will no doubt fuel the fire of Team USA in their quest for gold headed into Milan-Cortina.
Under the guidance of two-time Stanley Cup-winning head coach Mike Sullivan, who serves as the current head coach of the New York Rangers, the U.S. will go into the 12-team Olympic tournament as one of the teams to beat.
Team USA will compete in Group C in the preliminary round with Germany, Latvia and Denmark. Group A includes Canada, Czechia, Switzerland and France, while Group B comprises Finland, Sweden, Slovakia and Italy. The top finisher in each group after round-robin play earns a bye directly to the quarterfinals, along with the best second-ranked team. The other eight teams face-off to earn the remaining four quarterfinal spots. The four quarterfinal winners meet in the semifinals, with the two winners competing for gold and the two losing teams battling for bronze. For more information, visit USA Hockey's page here.
