The USOPC established Order of Ikkos beginning in 2008 as a symbol of excellence in coaching and to recognize the efforts of coaches whose athletes medal during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This medal is inspired by Ikkos, the first recorded coach in Ancient Greece - He was known for his coaching ability by coaching two fellow Tarentine athletes to gold in pentathlon. The Order of Ikkos provides the opportunity for athletes to recognize coaches for their leadership, support, and inspiration to help them reach the podium on the world’s greatest stage with a medal of their own.
