Athlete Experience

Team USA Performance
  • Athlete experience is at the heart of everything the USOPC does. Approaching athlete wellness holistically helps the team perform at their best on and off the field of play. In 2024, we continued to level up our support, from expanded mental and physical health services to new investments in research, prevention and innovation. New tools like the Agora communication platform simplified how athletes and National Governing Bodies (NGBs) connect with benefits, while on-site services at trials, training centers and in Paris offered critical, real-time support. We also piloted new initiatives in long-term rehab, sleep and injury prevention to elevate readiness and recovery. Athlete feedback gathered through our most comprehensive listening efforts to date is already informing what’s next. Together, these efforts reflect a more proactive, personalized approach – one that empowers every athlete to feel supported, seen and set up for success.

Well-Being and Safety#

  • In 2024, the USOPC elevated athlete well-being through increased resource offerings. At Olympic and Paralympic trials and during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, support systems were more accessible, more visible and more trusted than ever. With experienced teams on the ground and expanded services in place, athletes knew their physical and mental health were top priorities, allowing them to compete with confidence and peace of mind.

Well-Being and Safety

  • Medical and Psychological Services Support

USOPC medical providers had 17,500+ encounters at training centers and 5,000+ onsite at the Games, plus 1,200+ psychological services sessions in Paris. Post-Games surveys showed athletes rated psychological services among the best USOPC offerings.

Mental Health and Performance#

  • Mental health remained a vital part of the athlete experience in 2024, with more Team USA athletes actively seeking support and leveraging the USOPC’s expanded services than ever before. From trials to Paris 2024, on-site providers met athletes where they were, offering care, guidance and a familiar presence. With enhanced screenings, dedicated funding and growing awareness, the USOPC further elevated mental well-being as a key driver of both performance and personal strength.

Mental Health and Mental Performance

  • Advancing Mental Health Screening

Ahead of Paris 2024, all athletes were screened with the Sport Mental Health Assessment Tool (SMHAT) for concerns like anxiety, depression, sleep and more. Over 50% were flagged for follow-ups, and all received care.

  • Team USA Family Fund

Launched in 2024 with support from USOPC donors, the Team USA Family Fund assists athletes in navigating the dual challenges of elite competition and early parenthood. The fund provides grants to help cover essential expenses such as postnatal recovery, childcare, infant supplies and feeding support to help athletes focus on training and competition with fewer financial and logistical burdens.

In its first year, the Family Fund awarded grants to 34 Team USA athletes who were new parents with children under 24 months. This initiative reflects the USOPC’s commitment to supporting athletes holistically through investing in their dreams on and off the field.

Research and Collaboration#

  • The USOPC continued to lead with purpose on a global scale through advanced research and expanded provider networks to elevate athlete care throughout the year. Hosting the IOC Research Meeting for the first time was a defining moment that marked a new level of international collaboration. The USOPC also made strides in areas like sleep, concussion care and women’s health, turning insight into meaningful action. This work reflects our focus on constant evolution to meet the needs of athletes and strengthen the systems that support their success.

Post-Games Survey Results

Following the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the USOPC conducted its most comprehensive delegation survey to date, capturing feedback from 12 key stakeholder groups, including athletes, NGB staff, donors, volunteers and fans. Created in partnership with a third-party research firm, the results from this first-of-its-kind effort are a powerful testimony of Team USA’s united, athlete-first approach. Athletes and delegation members shared high praise for their experience, with satisfaction ratings that highlight the strength of our preparation, the quality of our care and the deep pride in representing Team USA.

Success off the Field#

  • Athlete success isn’t just measured in medals – it’s built over a lifetime. Through education, career development, marketing tools and more, the USOPC’s Athlete Development and Engagement Services help Team USA athletes thrive during and after their competitive careers. While USOPC-driven media engagement opportunities and campaigns promoted athlete brand building, programs like 1:1 Career Coaching and Pivot prepared athletes for successful futures beyond Team USA. In 2024, more athletes than ever accessed these resources. Most Team USA athletes opted into the Athlete Marketing Program (AMP), and dozens began tuition-free degree and certificate programs through the new Guild online learning offering. These services build lasting impact through every stage of the athlete journey, including life after competitive sport.
